London Stock Exchange welcomes Johnson Matthey to celebrate 200 years of inspiring science

Employees from Johnson Matthey’s UK operations joined Robert MacLeod, Chief Executive, as he opened the market at the London Stock Exchange this morning in honour of the company’s 200th anniversary.

Johnson Matthey is a global leader in science that makes the world cleaner and healthier. The company was founded in Hatton Garden in 1817 by Percival Norton Johnson as a gold assaying business. His pioneering work in determining precious metal content and refining precious metals quickly established his reputation for quality and accuracy.

Two hundred years later, Johnson Matthey has operations on all continents and over 90% of the company’s sales come from technologies that have an explicit environmental, health or sustainability benefit.  Its science enables the global automotive, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries and its business constantly evolves and innovates to meet the changing needs of these industries.

Today, one third of all new cars on the planet are fitted with catalysts manufactured by Johnson Matthey, dramatically reducing vehicle emissions worldwide. At the same time, the company is applying its expertise to create vital products for the pharmaceutical and medical industries, making a difference to the health and wellbeing of many people around the world.

Throughout its history, Johnson Matthey has always had science and technology at its core. Through the constant application of new ideas and new processes, the company has built an organisation that has sustained 200 years of growth and that is helping create a sustainable future for our planet.

Robert MacLeod, Chief Executive of Johnson Matthey said:
“This is a very special year for all of us at Johnson Matthey as we celebrate our 200th anniversary.  This extraordinary achievement belongs to my colleagues worldwide, some of whom are here today, and to our predecessors. For two centuries Johnson Matthey has been at the forefront of inspiring science and it’s an honour to celebrate that here today. Much of the important work that we do is not visible to the naked eye but the impact of our science is global and profound. This year we renew our mission to make the world a cleaner and healthier place for everyone”.
