LSEG launches global Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System for renewable energy

The Artificial Intelligence/Integrated Forecasting System (AIFS) from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has been incorporated into LSEG’s in-house developed models in LSEG Workspace.

This includes models for wind generation, solar generation and power demand for all major countries in Europe and selected geographies around the world.

The data will help energy providers optimise operations, mitigate risks and adapt to meteorological events. LSEG Research and Insights is a major provider of trading analytics but also long-term forecasts for electricity. LSEG provides information that inform investment decisions and build confidence in a sustainable energy future.

“Renewable energy now supplies nearly a third of global electricity, but unpredictable weather remains a major challenge. This update will help our customers make faster, smarter and more confident decisions,” said LSEG Head of Commodities and Corporates, Andrew Toumazi.

The announcement arrived days after the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) upgraded its AIFS model, to incorporate solar radiation and wind speeds at 100 metres — the height of a typical turbine — which is helpful for the renewable energy sector.
